What's Happening?
The City University of New York's (CUNY) College Bridge for All program, in partnership with New York City Public Schools, is addressing the issue of 'summer melt'—where college-bound students fail to enroll in college after graduation. The program enlists
college students as Bridge Coaches to guide graduating seniors through the transition to college, offering personalized support in areas such as financial aid and college selection. In 2025, the program supported over 50,000 students, achieving a summer melt rate of 7.7%, down from 14.4% in 2024. The initiative emphasizes near-peer mentorship, where mentors close in age to the students provide relatable guidance.
Why It's Important?
The College Bridge for All program plays a crucial role in increasing college enrollment rates, particularly among low-income and first-generation students who are most at risk of summer melt. By providing targeted support and leveraging data-sharing agreements, the program helps students navigate complex enrollment processes and overcome barriers such as financial aid applications. This approach not only improves educational outcomes but also contributes to social mobility by ensuring that more students can access higher education opportunities. The success of the program highlights the effectiveness of near-peer mentorship in educational settings, offering a model that could be replicated in other regions to support student transitions.
