What's Happening?
Decay Devils, a nonprofit organization based in Gary, Indiana, has received two grants totaling $13,000 to support the creation of 'NWI Landmarks and Arts: A Regional Guide to Northwest Indiana’s Art and Historic
Landmarks.' The grants include a $10,000 Transform Lake County grant from the Legacy Foundation and a $3,000 Historic Preservation grant from Indiana Humanities. The project aims to document public art and historic sites across Northwest Indiana, including areas such as Gary, East Chicago, Hammond, Michigan City, and Whiting. The initiative, which began during the COVID-19 pandemic, seeks to engage the community by highlighting regional landmarks and encouraging outdoor activities. Decay Devils plans to collaborate with local partners to identify significant sites for inclusion in the guide.
Why It's Important?
The project is significant as it aims to promote cultural and historical awareness in Northwest Indiana, potentially boosting tourism and local engagement. By expanding beyond Gary, Decay Devils is working to highlight the diverse cultural assets of the region, which could lead to increased economic activity and community pride. The initiative also underscores the importance of preserving historical sites and public art, which are often overlooked in urban development. The funding from the Legacy Foundation and Indiana Humanities reflects a broader commitment to supporting community-driven projects that foster economic growth and cultural preservation.
What's Next?
Decay Devils plans to meet with community partners in January to discuss which landmarks will be featured in the guide. The organization aims to create both printed and digital versions of the guide, host tours, and activate public art and historic sites through community engagement. The project may expand to include other areas such as Valparaiso, depending on interest and additional funding. The success of this initiative could inspire similar projects in other regions, further promoting the preservation of cultural and historical landmarks.
