What's Happening?
The ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute (ICAR-SBI) in Coimbatore, in collaboration with Bannari Amman Sugars Ltd., organized a Field Day to promote high-yielding sugarcane varieties such as 'Co 18009', 'Co 11015', and 'Co 14012'. The event aimed to encourage
farmers to adopt these new varieties to replace older, less productive ones. Dr. P. Govindaraj, Director of ICAR-SBI, emphasized the importance of varietal replacement to combat declining productivity and profitability in sugarcane farming. The event also addressed labor scarcity issues and the need for mechanization in farming operations.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of high-yielding sugarcane varieties is significant for improving agricultural productivity and farmer incomes in the region. By adopting these new varieties, farmers can potentially increase their yields and reduce the incidence of diseases affecting older varieties. The initiative also highlights the importance of mechanization in addressing labor shortages, which is a growing concern in agriculture. This development could lead to more sustainable farming practices and economic benefits for farmers, contributing to the overall growth of the agricultural sector.
What's Next?
Following the Field Day, ICAR-SBI plans to involve farmers more actively in the varietal development process to ensure better adaptability and faster adoption of improved varieties. The distribution of seed material and technical literature during the event is expected to facilitate this transition. Additionally, Bannari Amman Sugars Ltd. is offering subsidy schemes to support farmers in adopting these new varieties. The success of these initiatives could lead to increased interest in high-yielding sugarcane cultivation, potentially expanding the area under cultivation and boosting production in the region.
