What's Happening?
Heather Johnstone from Fleetwood, Lancashire, has been recognized by the Princess of Wales for her efforts in organizing Christmas dinners for those spending the holiday alone. Since 2019, Johnstone has been serving festive lunches to up to 250 people
annually. Her initiative began after a challenging year in 2018, when she realized the need for community support during the holidays. The event has grown significantly, with the 2024 dinner feeding more than 250 people. Johnstone's work has led to the founding of Ember and Blossom CIC, a community group supporting the project. The Princess of Wales invited Johnstone to a Royal Carol Service at Westminster Abbey, where she lit a candle in recognition of her contributions.
Why It's Important?
This initiative highlights the importance of community support and social inclusion, especially during the holiday season. By providing a space for people to come together, Johnstone's efforts help combat loneliness and foster a sense of belonging. The recognition by the Princess of Wales brings attention to the issue of social isolation and the positive impact of grassroots community projects. Such initiatives can inspire similar efforts across the U.S., where loneliness and social isolation are also significant concerns, particularly among the elderly and marginalized groups.
