What's Happening?
An 18th-century roadside milestone located on the A363 at Trowle, near Trowbridge, Wiltshire, has been granted Grade II listed status. This milestone, which reads 'To Bath, 10,' dates back to the 1700s
when the A363 was a turnpike road. The listing provides the milestone with greater protection against removal or development, ensuring its preservation for future generations. David Birks from Trowbridge Museum emphasized the importance of such historical markers, which often go unnoticed but offer significant insights into the past. The milestone is one of three on the same stretch to receive this status, originally maintained by the Bradford Turnpike Trust.
Why It's Important?
The listing of the milestone highlights the importance of preserving smaller historical artifacts that contribute to the understanding of local and national heritage. These markers are remnants of a bygone era, offering insights into historical travel and commerce routes. The protection of such artifacts ensures that future generations can appreciate and learn from these tangible links to the past. The decision to list the milestone reflects a broader recognition of the need to preserve cultural heritage in the face of modern development pressures.
