What's Happening?
The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) has been recognized with a silver award at the 7th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Energy Smart Communities Initiative (ESCI) Best Practices Awards. The award was given for their project titled
'Shenzhen Urban-Style Smart Grid Innovation: Energy as a Service & Virtual Power Plant Practice.' This project, developed in collaboration with the Shenzhen Power Supply Bureau of China Southern Power Grid and Tsinghua University, integrates distributed photovoltaic systems with battery energy storage systems to form a virtual power plant. This setup not only supplies electricity but also provides ancillary services to the power grid, addressing challenges such as power supply and demand imbalances and land scarcity. The project highlights the collaboration between industry, government, and academia in energy innovation.
Why It's Important?
This recognition underscores the importance of smart grid technology in addressing energy challenges and supporting carbon reduction targets. The project demonstrates how integrating renewable energy sources with advanced storage solutions can enhance power security and efficiency. It also highlights the potential for international cooperation in energy innovation, as seen in the collaboration between Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland. The success of this project could serve as a model for other regions looking to implement similar solutions, promoting sustainable energy practices and contributing to global efforts to combat climate change.
What's Next?
Towngas and its partners plan to continue leveraging their strengths in energy, technology, and finance to promote innovative practices such as zero-carbon smart industrial parks and virtual power plants. They aim to share their solutions and expertise in energy transition with the international community, furthering global cooperation in sustainable energy development. The ongoing collaboration between Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland is expected to play a crucial role in advancing these initiatives.
