What's Happening?
The Maryland Agriculture Council has appointed Jenell Eck McHenry of Agpert Services LLC to manage its programs, events, and communications. McHenry, a seasoned professional in Maryland's agricultural sector, will work alongside Executive Director Susan
G. Summers and Assistant Executive Director Gail P. Yeiser. Her primary responsibility will be coordinating the annual Taste of Maryland Agriculture gala and other council initiatives. The council, a nonprofit organization, aims to promote Maryland's agricultural industry through education and advocacy. McHenry's extensive experience includes roles at the Maryland Grain Producers Association and the Maryland Pork Producers. She also operates McHenry’s Beef and Harvesting in Kent County with her family. The council's flagship event, the Taste of Maryland Agriculture, serves as a platform for agricultural stakeholders to discuss issues such as farm bill updates and climate adaptation.
Why It's Important?
The appointment of McHenry comes at a crucial time as Maryland's agricultural sector faces economic pressures, including fluctuating commodity prices and regulatory changes. The sector is a significant contributor to the state's economy, generating $3.3 billion in cash receipts in 2022 and supporting over 350,000 jobs. The council's efforts to bridge agriculture with policymakers are vital for addressing these challenges and ensuring the industry's sustainability. McHenry's role is expected to enhance the council's outreach, particularly in engaging younger farmers and promoting sustainable practices. Her leadership is anticipated to strengthen advocacy efforts and support the sector's growth amid ongoing challenges.
What's Next?
The Maryland Agriculture Council will continue to focus on its advocacy and educational initiatives, with the next Taste of Maryland Agriculture event scheduled for February 5, 2026. The council will also administer educational grants to promote farming's role in food security and economic stability. McHenry's involvement is expected to bring fresh perspectives and strategies to these initiatives, potentially leading to increased engagement with policymakers and the public. The council's ongoing efforts to recognize agricultural pioneers and support local educational programs will further contribute to the sector's resilience and growth.
