What's Happening?
Recent rainfall in parts of India, including Delhi, Haryana, and East Rajasthan, has slightly reduced the country's overall monsoon deficit. However, the cumulative rainfall deficit remains significant, with many agrarian states like Bihar, Jharkhand,
Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Andhra Pradesh still experiencing deficient rainfall. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reports that the national deficit decreased by only one percentage point, from 12% to 11%. The rains have come after the sowing of Kharif crops, which cover 88% of the sown area, resulting in only a minor reduction in acreage deficit. The IMD predicts increased rainfall activity in Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Bihar from August 13, which may aid in the revival of paddy and maize sowing.
