Gary Mayor Eddie Melton, alongside other mayors from the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence region, has launched an Economic Transformation Action Plan aimed at fostering economic growth and freshwater stewardship. The plan, developed by the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative's Mayors Commission on Economic Transformation, outlines 17 strategies and 76 actions for local governments and stakeholders. It aims to position the region as one of North America's fastest-growing economies while safeguarding its freshwater resources. Key goals include attracting 500,000 new businesses committed to sustainability, creating 18 million jobs, improving water quality, and reducing emissions by 300 million metric tons by 2035.
