What's Happening?
The U.S. Air Force has awarded Boeing a $75 million contract to produce long-range Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAMs), marking a significant enhancement in the Air Force's strike capabilities. The new variant, known as the GBU-75 JDAM-LR, boasts a stand-off
range of over 300 nautical miles, a substantial increase from the standard JDAM's 15 nautical miles. This development is part of a broader effort to extend the range of key munitions in response to advancements in adversaries' air defenses, which have made penetrating strikes by non-stealthy aircraft increasingly risky. The JDAM-LR, developed in collaboration with the Navy, completed its flight testing in April and is designed to provide a more affordable mass capability compared to more expensive stand-off munitions.
