What's Happening?
The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) are progressing with their AI 10 Billion Initiative, which aims to mobilize $1 billion annually over the next decade to support artificial intelligence adoption
across Africa. Following recent meetings in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, the partners outlined plans to initially launch the initiative in five countries, with an expansion to 20 African nations by the end of 2027. This collaborative effort brings together the two institutions and private sector partners to link AI investment with business productivity and employment generation. The program is projected to contribute to the creation of 25 million new jobs by 2035, with a focus on sectors such as agriculture, wholesale and retail, manufacturing, finance, and health.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is crucial for Africa's economic transformation, as inclusive AI adoption could add up to $1 trillion to the continent's GDP by 2035, according to the AfDB's 2025 report, 'Africa’s AI Productivity Gain.' By focusing on practical applications like local-language advisory services for farmers, payment tools for traders, and clinical decision support in health facilities, the program aims to address real-world business needs and improve service delivery. The emphasis on project preparation and linking AI investments to national economic priorities ensures that funding is directed towards impactful and sustainable projects. This collaboration signifies a strategic effort to leverage AI as a catalyst for competitiveness, employment, and inclusive growth across the continent.
What's Next?
The next steps involve participating countries conducting assessments to identify areas where AI can enhance productivity, followed by the preparation of public and private sector projects for financing. Country investment platforms will be established to bring together governments, investors, and regional economic communities, creating a pipeline of projects aligned with national economic priorities. The AfDB and UNDP will continue to work with private sector partners to mobilize the targeted $10 billion over the next decade. The initiative's success will depend on sustained investment in reliable data, computing infrastructure, workforce skills, governance, and capital, ensuring that the necessary systems are in place to effectively utilize AI.
Beyond the Headlines
The AfDB and UNDP's AI initiative represents a significant commitment to fostering technological advancement and economic development in Africa. Beyond the immediate economic gains, this program has the potential to address long-standing development challenges, such as food security, financial inclusion, and healthcare access, through AI-driven solutions. It also highlights a growing trend of international organizations partnering with the private sector to achieve development goals, recognizing the need for diverse funding sources and innovative approaches. The focus on job creation and productivity underscores the transformative potential of AI, but also implicitly acknowledges the need for careful planning to ensure that AI adoption leads to equitable growth and does not exacerbate existing inequalities or displace workers without adequate reskilling opportunities.
