What's Happening?
A recent study published in JAMA has found that self-administered hypnosis can significantly reduce hot flashes in postmenopausal women. The study involved 250 women, with one group practicing self-hypnosis
and the other undergoing fake hypnosis. Results showed that the self-hypnotized group experienced a 53% reduction in hot flashes. This nonhormonal treatment offers an alternative to traditional hormone therapy, which can increase the risk of certain cancers and other health issues. Hypnosis has previously been recommended by the Menopause Society for managing menopausal symptoms.
Why It's Important?
The study provides a promising alternative for women seeking nonhormonal treatments for menopause symptoms, particularly those with a history of breast cancer. Hormonal treatments pose risks such as cancer, stroke, and heart disease, making hypnosis a safer option for many. This development could lead to wider acceptance and use of hypnosis in managing menopause symptoms, improving the quality of life for many women. It also highlights the need for more research into nonhormonal treatments for menopause, potentially leading to new therapeutic approaches.
