What's Happening?
Ava Community Energy has successfully saved residents of Stockton and Lathrop more than $4.4 million on their energy bills within just six months of service. This achievement is attributed to Ava's Bright Choice plan, which offers a five percent reduction
in electricity generation rates compared to PG&E. Ava became the default electricity provider for these areas on April 1, 2025, and since then, residents have benefited from the cost savings. Ava's strategy involves purchasing power through competitive processes that favor clean, renewable energy at lower costs. As a local government agency, Ava operates with low overhead costs and reinvests excess revenue into the community, maintaining a discount compared to PG&E.
Why It's Important?
The significant savings achieved by Ava Community Energy highlight the potential benefits of community choice aggregation in reducing energy costs for consumers. By offering lower rates and investing in clean energy, Ava not only provides financial relief to residents but also supports environmental sustainability. This model could serve as a blueprint for other regions looking to reduce energy costs and promote renewable energy. The initiative also encourages the adoption of electric vehicles by providing managed charging solutions and public charging infrastructure, further contributing to a reduction in carbon emissions.
What's Next?
Ava Community Energy plans to expand its initiatives, including the development of a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) program. This program will involve solar and home battery storage solutions, particularly in high fire threat areas, and will launch a new solar and storage incentive program in early 2026. These efforts aim to enhance grid stability and further reduce energy costs. Additionally, Ava's expansion of public charging infrastructure is expected to boost electric vehicle adoption, providing more sustainable transportation options for residents.
Beyond the Headlines
Ava's approach to energy management reflects a growing trend towards local energy solutions that prioritize sustainability and community benefits. By reducing reliance on traditional energy providers and investing in renewable sources, Ava is contributing to a broader shift in how energy is produced and consumed. This model not only addresses economic concerns but also aligns with environmental goals, potentially influencing energy policies and practices on a larger scale.
