A study conducted by researchers from the New York State Psychiatric Institute and Columbia University has investigated the effects of ketamine on cortisol levels and its potential to reduce suicidal thoughts in patients with severe depression. The study involved
80 adults who were experiencing major depression and severe suicidal thoughts. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either a low dose of ketamine or a comparison sedative, midazolam. The results showed that 24 hours after ketamine treatment, there was a significant increase in morning cortisol levels, which was associated with a reduction in suicidal thoughts. However, the link between cortisol increase and reduction in suicidal thoughts was not statistically significant. The findings were published in the Journal of Affective Disorders.
