What's Happening?
The city of Salina has initiated a strategic plan to bolster its arts and culture sector, marking the first such effort since 2009. The initiative, known as The Big Picture: Salina's Cultural Strategic Plan, is spearheaded by Salina Arts and Humanities,
with Keen Independent Research conducting the assessment. The plan aims to evaluate and enhance the city's cultural offerings, leveraging existing institutions like Theatre Salina, the Stiefel Theatre, and Salina Art Center. A community forum was held on April 7, where stakeholders and residents provided input on the future of arts and culture in Salina. An online survey is also available for community members to share their perspectives, ensuring broad participation in shaping the city's cultural landscape.
Why It's Important?
Salina's strategic plan for arts and culture is significant as it seeks to maintain and expand the city's cultural infrastructure, which is already considered advanced for its size. By investing in arts and culture, Salina aims to enhance its community identity and attract more visitors and residents, potentially boosting local economic growth. The plan underscores the importance of cultural investment in fostering community engagement and societal values. As Salina continues to 'punch above its weight' in cultural offerings, this initiative could serve as a model for other cities looking to strengthen their cultural sectors.
What's Next?
The strategic plan is set to continue until January 2027, with ongoing community engagement through surveys and forums. Salina Arts and Humanities will collect input from residents and stakeholders to guide the development of the plan. The city aims to gather at least 1,500 responses to ensure a comprehensive understanding of community needs and aspirations. The results will inform future investments and initiatives in the arts and culture sector, with the goal of maintaining Salina's leadership in cultural offerings.
