What's Happening?
Kapolei High School seniors in Hawaii participated in a unique audio project as they prepared for their graduation. This initiative, led by DW Gibson, the executive producer of podcasts and multimedia at Hawaii Public Radio (HPR), involved ten seniors maintaining
an audio journal. The project aimed to document their thoughts and emotions during the weeks leading up to and following their graduation. The students recorded their experiences, capturing significant moments such as their last interactions with teachers, receiving awards, and participating in traditional senior activities like yearbook signings and senior portraits. The project was designed to provide a detailed look at the emotional crescendo of graduation preparations and celebrations.
Why It's Important?
This project highlights the importance of capturing personal and emotional milestones in students' lives, offering a platform for self-expression and reflection. By documenting their experiences, the students not only preserve their memories but also contribute to a broader understanding of the high school graduation experience in Hawaii. This initiative underscores the role of media in education, providing students with an opportunity to engage with storytelling and multimedia production. It also emphasizes the cultural significance of graduation in Hawaii, where such events are celebrated with unique traditions and community involvement.
