What's Happening?
Deacons, a prominent Hong Kong law firm, has partnered with the charity Farm the City as part of the annual fundraising campaign, Operation Santa Claus. On January 24, 25 employees from Deacons joined 18 elderly volunteers at an urban farm on the rooftop
of Metroplaza in Kwai Fong. The initiative aims to promote urban farming by transforming unused spaces into gardens that provide vegetables and herbs for low-income elderly residents. This project not only supplements the diets of these residents but also encourages them to engage in physical activity and social interaction, thereby improving their physical and mental well-being. Deacons has been a major supporter of Operation Santa Claus for 15 years, reflecting its commitment to giving back to the community.
Why It's Important?
The involvement of Deacons in Operation Santa Claus highlights the role of corporate social responsibility in addressing social issues such as food security and elderly care. By supporting urban farming, the initiative addresses the nutritional needs of low-income elderly residents in Hong Kong, a demographic often at risk of isolation and poor health. This project also fosters community engagement and social cohesion, as it brings together volunteers and beneficiaries in a shared activity. The long-term support from Deacons underscores the importance of sustained corporate involvement in charitable activities, which can lead to meaningful and lasting impacts on local communities.
