What's Happening?
Grand Challenges, in collaboration with the Gates Foundation, Temasek Foundation, and the United Nations Foundation, has launched a call for proposals to fund innovations in low-cost and simplified pathogen sequencing workflows. The initiative aims to address
significant barriers preventing routine pathogen genomic sequencing in public health laboratories, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). These barriers include high sequencing costs, complex laboratory workflows, limited technical capacity, infrastructure constraints, and long turnaround times. The program offers awards of up to US$800,000 for projects that develop scalable, simplified, and affordable sequencing approaches for pathogen surveillance and outbreak response, with a target per-sample cost of approximately US$1–10. The initiative seeks both technological and operational innovations to make pathogen sequencing cheaper, simpler, faster, and easier to deploy routinely.

What's Next?
The deadline for proposals is September 29, 2026. Successful applicants will receive funding across three tiers: early-stage feasibility projects (up to US$300,000), mid-stage development projects (up to US$600,000), and advanced development and validation projects (up to US$800,000). Approximately 15 awards are expected. Projects will focus on activities such as laboratory workflow development, protocol optimization, cost reduction research, platform compatibility testing, and field validation in LMIC public health environments. The initiative emphasizes the development of solutions that can function under infrastructure and resource constraints common in LMIC laboratories and be adapted across multiple pathogen types. The long-term goal is to integrate these affordable and simplified sequencing methods into routine public health systems, enhancing outbreak detection, variant monitoring, and overall emergency response capacity globally.
