What's Happening?
Health system IT leaders in the U.S. are encountering significant barriers in scaling artificial intelligence (AI) due to reliance on electronic health record (EHR) vendors. A report by Qventus highlights that 74% of health system leaders view EHR vendor dependency
as a major obstacle to executing their AI strategies. The report, based on a survey of over 60 senior IT leaders, reveals that many health systems are hesitant to wait for EHR vendors to develop AI solutions, with only 22% willing to wait for EHR features. Instead, a growing number are opting for third-party AI solutions to avoid delays and capitalize on AI's potential benefits.
Why It's Important?
The reliance on EHR vendors is slowing down the adoption of AI in healthcare, which could have significant implications for the efficiency and effectiveness of health systems. AI has the potential to transform healthcare delivery by improving patient outcomes, reducing costs, and enhancing operational efficiency. However, the slow pace of AI implementation due to EHR vendor dependency could hinder these advancements. This situation also highlights the need for health systems to balance vendor relationships with the flexibility to adopt innovative technologies that can provide a competitive edge and improve patient care.
