What's Happening?
The Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) is collaborating with the Nigerian Advocacy for Women with Disabilities Initiative (AWWDI) to address the challenges faced by women
with disabilities in agriculture. This partnership is part of a scoping study aimed at understanding the role and impact of agriculture on women with disabilities in Africa. A recent stakeholder engagement session in Southwest Nigeria gathered insights from women with disabilities, agricultural experts, and community leaders. The project seeks to identify challenges and opportunities, and make policy recommendations to enhance the participation and socio-economic empowerment of African women with disabilities.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is significant as it aims to empower women with disabilities by promoting inclusive agricultural practices. Agriculture is a vital sector in Africa, providing livelihoods for millions, yet women with disabilities often face barriers to participation. By documenting their realities, the project aims to inform policies and programs that address their needs, thereby unlocking their potential. This research is not only about equity but also about building a resilient and sustainable food system in Africa. The findings could influence agricultural programs across Africa, ensuring that women with disabilities are actively included in future policies and initiatives.
What's Next?
The six-month scoping study will generate evidence to inform advocacy efforts, policy formulation, and inclusive agricultural programs tailored to the needs of women with disabilities. This project is one of the first under the Australian Government's Africa-Australia Partnership for Climate Responsive Agriculture initiative, which supports locally led agricultural development. The initiative aims to enhance the climate resilience of farming communities and strengthen women's participation in agricultural research. The outcomes of this study could lead to more equitable agricultural sectors across Africa.
