A study conducted in Germany, published in Developmental Psychology, indicates that children as young as four years old possess the ability to understand falsification through evidence. The research found that approximately half of four-year-olds could
provide valid verbal counterarguments, a percentage that increased to 70% by 5.5 years of age. Furthermore, 90% of four-year-olds were capable of selecting clear evidence to refute a false causal claim and prove a correct one. The study, authored by Özgün Köksal, Andrea Saffran, and Beate Sodian, involved 222 children from predominantly middle-class families in an urban area of Germany. Participants engaged in tasks where they learned about cause-and-effect relationships and then had to challenge incorrect claims made by a puppet, demonstrating their capacity for scientific argumentation.
