What's Happening?
Sloclap, the developer behind the cooperative third-person soccer game Rematch, is considering the addition of a 'rematch' button in its upcoming Season 3. The game, which repurposes elements from martial-arts-inspired
games Absolver and Sifu, is currently in its first season, featuring bug fixes and a Ranked 3v3 mode. Players have been requesting a rematch button to allow teams to seek revenge against opponents. Although initially planned for Season 2, the feature is now more likely to be introduced in Season 3, according to Rematch creative director Pierre Tarno. The team is also working on a 'team up' button to facilitate forming groups with preferred teammates. Adjustments to gameplay mechanics are ongoing, with the team focusing on refining interactions that are visible to all players on the field.
Why It's Important?
The potential introduction of a rematch button in Rematch could significantly enhance player engagement and satisfaction by allowing teams to replay matches against specific opponents. This feature addresses a common request from the game's community, indicating Sloclap's responsiveness to player feedback. The planned updates, including the 'team up' button, aim to foster better team dynamics and cooperation, which are crucial for the game's success. As Rematch continues to evolve, these changes could attract more players and increase retention, impacting the competitive landscape of online multiplayer games. The focus on refining gameplay mechanics highlights the challenges of maintaining balance in a live-service game where every interaction is visible to all players.
What's Next?
Following the release of Patch 5, which refines the volley action system, Rematch is set to receive a new mode before the end of Season 1. This mode aims to reinforce team play and improve passing strategies. Afterward, Sloclap will focus on Season 2, scheduled for 2026, with changes inspired by Rocket League, including new callouts and communication systems. The team is also planning to introduce leaver penalties and a forfeit-match option to address issues with players leaving games prematurely. These updates are expected to enhance the overall gameplay experience and encourage strategic play.
Beyond the Headlines
The development of Rematch reflects broader trends in the gaming industry, where player feedback and community engagement are increasingly influencing game design and updates. The emphasis on team dynamics and communication tools aligns with the growing demand for cooperative and competitive multiplayer experiences. As Sloclap continues to refine Rematch, the game could set new standards for live-service games, particularly in terms of transparency and responsiveness to player needs.
