What's Happening?
Protein Industries Canada is funding a project between Terra Bioindustries and Great Western Brewing Co. to convert brewers spent grain (BSG) into high-value food ingredients. Using proprietary upcycling technology, the project aims to create ingredients like
Terra Protina, Terra Fibra, Terra Choc, and Terra Malt. These ingredients are intended to serve as low-carbon bases for food products. The initiative focuses on using Terra Malt in the development of a non-alcoholic beer, with the goal of enhancing sustainability and reducing waste in the brewing industry.
Why It's Important?
This project represents a significant advancement in sustainable food production, highlighting the potential of upcycling technology to reduce waste and create value from byproducts. By transforming BSG into functional ingredients, the initiative supports environmental sustainability and strengthens the domestic supply chain. This approach not only reduces the carbon footprint of food production but also creates economic opportunities by adding value to existing agricultural outputs. The project aligns with global trends towards sustainability and circular economy practices, potentially setting a precedent for similar initiatives worldwide.
