What's Happening?
The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry (MAFFI), Datuk Jamawi Jaafar, has introduced the Kitchen Garden initiative and modern technology-based agricultural programs to enhance food security and reduce living costs for rural communities
in Sabah. These measures aim to improve the wellbeing of the B40 group, which includes low-income farmers, smallholders, and fishermen. The Kitchen Garden Roadshow will be implemented across Sabah, starting in Tuaran on February 15, with affordable packages for agricultural inputs. The initiative encourages self-sufficiency by cultivating vegetables and livestock at home, reducing dependency on market purchases. The program also includes training on ginger cultivation, with financial support for participants.
Why It's Important?
Strengthening the rural agriculture sector is vital for improving food security and reducing living costs in Sabah. By empowering low-income communities, the initiative aims to uplift the status and wellbeing of farmers and fishermen. The focus on self-sufficiency through home cultivation can lead to sustainable food production and economic stability for rural areas. The involvement of local leaders and community members in these programs highlights a collaborative approach to addressing agricultural challenges. The initiative also supports the state's policy of prioritizing local needs and resources, contributing to long-term economic growth and resilience.
What's Next?
The Kitchen Garden Roadshow will continue to expand across Sabah, with further training and support for participants. The ministry plans to provide affordable agricultural packages to encourage widespread adoption of home cultivation practices. As the initiative progresses, it is expected to enhance food security and economic stability for rural communities. Continued collaboration with local leaders and agricultural officers will be crucial for the success of these programs.
