What's Happening?
Mars, Incorporated and Olam Food Ingredients (OFI) have launched a five-year strategic partnership to advance climate-smart cocoa production in Ecuador. The initiative, running from 2025 to 2029, aims to scale regenerative agriculture practices across
their cocoa supply chain, focusing on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving farm productivity. The program will initially support over 960 farmers in key cocoa-growing regions, transitioning from traditional monoculture systems to multistrata agroforestry models. These systems enhance biodiversity, improve soil health, and boost yields while providing natural pest and disease protection.
Why It's Important?
This collaboration is crucial for promoting sustainable cocoa production and addressing climate change impacts. By implementing regenerative agriculture practices, the initiative supports environmental conservation and enhances the resilience of cocoa farmers. The project also aligns with global efforts to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, contributing to the sustainability goals of both companies. The initiative is expected to benefit approximately 4,800 people in surrounding communities, highlighting its potential for positive social and economic impacts.
What's Next?
Mars and OFI will continue to work closely with local farmers and communities to implement the program. The initiative will focus on providing tools and training for low-carbon fertilization and improved crop management techniques. As the project progresses, it is expected to serve as a model for sustainable cocoa production, potentially influencing industry practices and policies globally.
