What's Happening?
Martha's Vineyard Hospital (MVH), a member of Mass General Brigham, has enrolled its first participant in a first-of-its-kind study aimed at understanding alpha-gal syndrome. This tick-borne condition causes an allergy to mammalian products such as meat
and dairy. The study plans to recruit 300 individuals who reside on Martha's Vineyard for more than three months annually and have experienced a lone star tick bite or larvae exposure within seven days prior to testing. Participants must be at least 15 years old, with those under 18 requiring written informed consent from a parent or legal guardian. The research seeks to identify why some individuals develop the syndrome after a tick bite while others do not, and what biological or demographic factors influence risk. The hospital has also seen a significant increase in alpha-gal testing and positive results in recent years, leading to the establishment of a new alpha-gal research center in West Tisbury.

What's Next?
The Martha's Vineyard Hospital study will follow participants over time with visits scheduled at baseline, three, six, 12, 18, and 24 months. Additional 'trigger' visits will occur after suspected reactions. Participants may receive compensation up to $100 for initial samples and $50 for each follow-up or trigger visit. Recruitment will continue through the hospital's tick clinic. A second, point prevalence study is also in development, which will use existing blood work samples to compare alpha-gal antibody rates on Martha's Vineyard with those in Nantucket and Boston, aiming to determine if the island has a higher prevalence. The hospital has secured close to $2 million in funding for these initial studies and plans to apply for larger grants, such as from the National Institutes of Health, as research progresses and findings are published.
