A recent study published in eClinicalMedicine, utilizing data from the UK Biobank, investigated the association between adherence to a Mediterranean lifestyle and the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and mortality in adults with type
2 diabetes (T2D). The study followed over 3,600 adults aged 40-70 with T2D, assessing their adherence to a Mediterranean lifestyle through a modified Mediterranean Lifestyle Index (MEDLIFE). This index considered dietary patterns, physical activity, rest, and social habits. The findings indicated that higher MEDLIFE adherence was significantly associated with a reduced risk of MACE, all-cause mortality, and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality. Specifically, participants in the highest MEDLIFE quartile showed a 27% lower risk of MACE, a 26% lower risk of all-cause death, and a 51% lower risk of CVD death compared to those in the lowest quartile. Each two-point increase in the MEDLIFE score was linked to a 12% lower risk of MACE, a 21% lower risk of CVD mortality, and a 9% lower risk of all-cause mortality.

The global prevalence of T2D is projected to increase by 62% between 2021 and 2050, affecting over 1.27 billion individuals.
