What's Happening?
North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey has postponed a hearing on proposed dwelling insurance rate increases, originally scheduled for May 4, to July 6. This decision comes as the Department of Insurance and the North Carolina Rate Bureau are
reportedly making progress towards a settlement. The Rate Bureau has proposed a significant rate hike, with an average increase of 28.5% effective July 1, 2026, followed by another 31% increase on July 1, 2027, totaling a 68.3% rise. Historically, such proposed increases have been reduced through negotiations. The last major filing in July 2023 saw a proposed 50.6% increase, which was negotiated down to an 8% average increase. The upcoming hearing will take place at the insurance department's office in Raleigh if a settlement is not reached by the new date.
Why It's Important?
The proposed rate hikes are significant for property owners in North Carolina, particularly those with non-owner-occupied residences such as rental and investment properties. A substantial increase in dwelling insurance rates could impact the affordability and profitability of owning such properties. The negotiations between the Department of Insurance and the Rate Bureau are crucial in determining the final rates, which could set a precedent for future insurance rate adjustments in the state. The outcome of these discussions will affect not only property owners but also the broader real estate market and insurance industry in North Carolina.
What's Next?
The rescheduled hearing on July 6 will be a critical juncture if a settlement is not reached beforehand. Stakeholders, including property owners and insurance companies, will be closely monitoring the negotiations. The potential for a compromise could lead to a more moderate rate increase, which would be more palatable to property owners. However, if negotiations fail, the proposed hikes could proceed, leading to increased costs for property insurance. The insurance department's ability to negotiate favorable terms will be a key factor in the final outcome.
