SLB and Ormat Technologies have announced a strategic partnership aimed at advancing the development and commercialization of integrated geothermal assets, including enhanced geothermal systems (EGS).
This collaboration seeks to deliver clean, reliable baseload energy in regions that extend beyond traditional hydrothermal resources. The agreement involves co-developing and deploying geothermal and EGS technologies, leveraging SLB's expertise in subsurface, reservoir, and well-construction, alongside Ormat's proficiency in geothermal power-plant design and operations. A pilot EGS project at an existing Ormat facility is planned to demonstrate commercial-scale performance and validate broader market deployment.
Why It's Important?
The partnership between SLB and Ormat is significant as it addresses the growing demand for clean energy driven by technological advancements such as AI. By making both traditional hydrothermal and EGS technologies competitive and commercially viable, the collaboration aims to scale quickly to meet global energy needs. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that next-generation geothermal could supply up to 300 GW of power domestically by 2050, which would account for nearly one-third of the total U.S. generating capacity. This development is crucial for the energy transition and the increasing demand for scalable and sustainable energy solutions.

Following the pilot project, SLB and Ormat plan to pursue global commercialization of EGS technologies targeting independent power producers, utilities, and large-scale energy users such as data-center operators.
