The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is investigating an outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a gastrointestinal illness caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. The outbreak has been linked to shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell
locations in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia. The CDC has advised consumers to avoid eating shredded lettuce from these locations as Taco Bell works to remove the contaminated produce and identify if it was distributed to other areas. As of now, 1,645 laboratory-confirmed cases have been reported across 34 states, with Michigan being one of the hardest-hit regions. Symptoms of cyclosporiasis include watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and fatigue, typically appearing one week after exposure. The illness is not usually life-threatening, but dehydration is a significant risk during the summer months.
