The U.S. Army has awarded AeroVironment, Inc. a $464.8 million production contract for its Enduring-High Energy Laser (E-HEL) program. This marks a historic milestone as the first production contract for a directed
energy system in the U.S. military's history. The E-HEL system, specifically the LOCUST laser weapons, is designed to counter unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) by firing a laser beam at targets, with its magazine reloading via the system's power supply. Vice Chief of Staff of the Army General Christopher LaNeve stated that this program will enable formations to defeat unmanned systems and ensure the Army outpaces adversaries. The contract will deliver dozens of 30 kW LOCUST laser weapons capable of engaging smaller drones.
