Karl Stephan, Ph.D., an electrical engineering professor at Texas State University, is conducting research to capture photographic evidence of ball lightning, a rare and mysterious atmospheric phenomenon. Despite its longstanding intrigue, ball lightning lacks
substantial photographic documentation. Stephan, along with Richard Sonnenfeld from New Mexico Tech University, has been collecting firsthand reports and images of ball lightning since 2020. A recent investigation into footage from Bozeman, Montana, initially thought to depict ball lightning, was later attributed to electrical arcs from a powerline. The researchers aim to refine their criteria for identifying genuine ball lightning occurrences.
