What's Happening?
HII is actively expanding its shipbuilding capacity by partnering with shipyards and fabricators across multiple states to meet the U.S. Navy's increased demand for ships. This strategic move involves outsourcing modular assembly of ships to a growing network of 23 companies. Notably, HII has acquired a manufacturing facility in Goose Creek, South Carolina, known as Charleston Operations, to produce submarine modules and structural aircraft carrier units. Additionally, HII is collaborating with partners in Virginia and beyond to build structural assemblies for future submarines and aircraft carriers. Ingalls Shipbuilding in Mississippi is also involved, with select structural units for Arleigh Burke-class destroyers being constructed at partner locations for final integration. These efforts aim to expand the U.S. shipbuilding industrial base and improve schedule adherence for all ships built by HII.
Why It's Important?
HII's expansion through partnerships is crucial for bolstering the U.S. shipbuilding industrial base, which is vital for national defense and security. By distributing shipbuilding tasks across multiple states, HII is creating jobs and enhancing production capacity, which can lead to more efficient and timely delivery of naval vessels. This approach not only supports the U.S. Navy's operational needs but also strengthens the domestic manufacturing sector. The partnerships with international companies like Hyundai Heavy Industries and Babcock International Group further enhance technological innovations and production efficiency, potentially positioning HII as a leader in global shipbuilding.
