Approximately 30,000 fish perished in a 'die-off' at Sandpiper Pond within St. Vrain State Park, located east of Longmont, over the past weekend. Nick Julian, a park administrator, attributed the mass death to a lack of oxygen in the water. Sandpiper Pond is naturally
shallow, and this year's low water levels, exacerbated by high temperatures, created conditions conducive to such an event. Julian noted that similar fish kills have occurred previously under comparable circumstances, particularly in the park's shallower ponds. Park rangers managed to clean up about a quarter of the deceased fish, while birds consumed the remainder, as detailed in a Facebook post by the park. This incident follows another significant fish kill in July, where thousands of fish died in a privately owned lake upstream, subsequently ending up in Loveland’s Boyd Lake channel.
