What's Happening?
The Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) marked International Women's Day by emphasizing the significant role women play in the tourism industry across the Caribbean. Dona Regis-Prosper, the first woman to serve as Secretary-General and CEO of CTO, highlighted
the ongoing gender disparities and the need for continued advocacy for women's rights. Under the United Nations theme 'Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls,' the day called for dismantling barriers to equal justice and addressing discriminatory practices. Regis-Prosper noted that women globally still hold only 64% of the legal rights that men do, underscoring the necessity for persistent advocacy and action. The CTO plans to feature women leaders in its annual magazine, 'From the Sea Suite,' during the Caribbean Women's Leadership Dinner & Awards in New York, June 2026.
Why It's Important?
The emphasis on women's leadership in tourism by the CTO is crucial as it highlights the ongoing gender disparities in legal rights and representation. By showcasing women's contributions, the CTO aims to inspire future generations and promote gender equality in the industry. This initiative not only recognizes the achievements of women in tourism but also seeks to create more opportunities and partnerships, thereby strengthening the sector. The focus on women's leadership is a step towards closing the gender gap and ensuring that women have equal opportunities to lead and innovate in the tourism industry, which is vital for the economic growth and cultural development of the Caribbean region.
What's Next?
The CTO will continue to promote women's leadership through its upcoming magazine edition and the Caribbean Women's Leadership Dinner & Awards. These events will provide a platform for women in tourism to share their stories and achievements, furthering the conversation on gender equality. The introduction of a Woman-Led Allied Member Directory will also highlight women-led businesses within the CTO community, fostering a supportive network for female entrepreneurs. These initiatives are expected to encourage more women to pursue leadership roles in tourism, contributing to a more inclusive and diverse industry.
