The U.S. Department of the Interior has released a comprehensive report on coal resources beneath federally managed public lands, estimating 4.2 billion short tons of reported coal reserves and an additional 356 billion short tons of available resources.

Wyoming, with the largest coal production, hosts 14 of the 34 active mines on federal land.
