What's Happening?
Aramco has commenced unconventional gas production at the Jafurah field and has also commissioned the Tanajib Gas Plant, marking significant milestones in its strategy to expand Saudi Arabia's gas production capacity by 2030. The Jafurah field, covering
approximately 17,000 square kilometers, is the largest liquids-rich unconventional gas development in the Middle East. It is estimated to contain 229 trillion standard cubic feet of raw gas and 75 billion barrels of condensate and liquids. By 2030, Jafurah is expected to deliver up to 2 billion standard cubic feet per day of sales gas, 420 million standard cubic feet per day of ethane, and approximately 630,000 barrels per day of high-value liquids. The Tanajib Gas Plant, which began operations in December 2025, is expected to reach a raw gas processing capacity of 2.6 billion standard cubic feet per day by 2026.
Why It's Important?
The developments at Jafurah and Tanajib are crucial for Aramco's long-term strategy to position natural gas as a cornerstone of Saudi Arabia's energy landscape. By significantly increasing its gas production capacity, Aramco aims to diversify the Kingdom's energy mix, reduce reliance on liquid fuels for domestic power generation, and enhance energy security. The incremental gas volumes from these projects could generate between $12 billion and $15 billion in additional operating cash flow by 2030, depending on market conditions. This expansion not only supports Saudi Arabia's economic goals but also aligns with global energy trends towards cleaner fuel sources.
What's Next?
With the Jafurah and Tanajib projects now operational, Aramco will continue to focus on integrating these developments into its broader gas portfolio. The company is likely to pursue further investments and partnerships to enhance its gas infrastructure and processing capabilities. As global demand for cleaner energy sources grows, Aramco's strategic focus on natural gas positions it to play a significant role in meeting this demand. The success of these projects could also influence future policy decisions and investments in the energy sector within Saudi Arabia and beyond.
