Northern Nevada Public Health (NNPH) has confirmed two new cases of mpox in Washoe County, marking the first reported instances since October 2022. Mpox, a viral illness, is primarily spread through close, prolonged skin-to-skin contact, including intimate
interactions. Symptoms of the disease include rash, fever, swollen lymph nodes, and fatigue. Despite the new cases, the overall risk to the general public remains low. NNPH is actively working to identify and notify close contacts of the confirmed cases to prevent further spread. Dr. Nancy Diao, Division Director for Population Health Division, emphasized the importance of awareness and preventive measures among residents, especially those at higher risk.
