What's Happening?
The University of Florida's Cancer Disparities Research Center (CDRC) is actively working to address cancer disparities in underserved communities, particularly among Black, Hispanic, and other minoritized groups. The CDRC, supported by the NCI-designated
UF Health Cancer Institute, focuses on reducing cancer incidence and mortality rates in low-income areas in or near East Gainesville and rural Alachua County. The center employs community scientists to engage with diverse populations, recruiting participants for health disparities and cancer-related research. These community scientists are tasked with explaining research studies, obtaining informed consent, and collecting data from participants. The initiative is part of a broader effort to conduct community-based participatory research aimed at promoting cancer prevention, treatment, and survivorship.
