What's Happening?
The Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) has entered into a contract with Airbus to acquire the enhanced A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT+). This agreement marks Thailand as the first customer for the MRTT+, which was launched in 2024. The aircraft, based on the A330-800neo airliner, is equipped with Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines and features both boom and hose-and-drogue refueling systems, a VVIP cabin, and a medical evacuation kit. The military conversion of the aircraft is scheduled to take place at Airbus's A330 MRTT Centre in Getafe, Spain, in 2026, with delivery expected in 2029. The contract is reportedly valued at approximately THB12 billion (USD372 million).
Why It's Important?
This acquisition represents a significant enhancement of Thailand's military capabilities, providing the RTAF with its first tanker capability. The MRTT+ will enable more efficient air-to-air refueling operations, which are crucial for extending the range and endurance of military aircraft. The deal also highlights Thailand's strategic partnership with Airbus and its commitment to modernizing its air force. Additionally, the agreement includes plans for Thai industry to maintain and sustain the aircraft, potentially boosting local aerospace capabilities and economic growth.
What's Next?
The RTAF plans to operate the MRTT+ from its Wing 6 unit at Don Mueang Air Base in Bangkok. There is also a draft plan to procure additional air-to-air refueling aircraft, although further purchases are not expected soon. Negotiations on offsets linked to the MRTT+ deal are planned between the RTAF and Airbus, focusing on ensuring effective maintenance and sustainability by Thai industry.
