What's Happening?
Two students from Drake State Community and Technical College have been awarded $20,000 scholarships each through the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF). The scholarships, part of the Workforce Development program, were given in two phases: an initial
$10,000 through the Cal and Annette Johnson Scholarship, and an additional $10,000 after selection for the TMCF Workforce Development Summit. The summit, held in Birmingham, Alabama, provided career development workshops and networking opportunities with industry leaders. The recipients, Corgan Smith and Australia 'Tru' Campbell, expressed how the scholarships have alleviated financial burdens and inspired their educational and personal growth.
Why It's Important?
The scholarships highlight the importance of supporting students from historically Black community colleges in achieving their academic and career goals. By providing financial assistance and professional development opportunities, the TMCF scholarships help bridge the gap for students who may face financial challenges. This initiative not only empowers individual students but also contributes to a more diverse and skilled workforce. The program underscores the role of educational support in fostering talent and promoting equity in higher education.
