What's Happening?
Astrobase Space Technologies, a Bengaluru-based company, has unveiled India's first privately built Full-Flow Staged Combustion (FFSC) rocket engine, named EVEREST. This development positions India as the fourth nation to possess FFSC engine technology,
following Russia, the USA, and China. The FFSC engines are known for their high propulsion efficiency and are considered more advanced than conventional engines. The EVEREST engine, which uses LOX-Methane propellants, is designed to support reusable launch systems and cleaner combustion. Astrobase plans to conduct fully integrated testing, including engine hot fire campaigns, in the coming months, with the first flight targeted for December 2028.

The unveiling of the EVEREST engine is a significant step for India's space capabilities, as it enhances the country's indigenous launch capabilities and strengthens its long-term access to space. The FFSC technology is complex but offers high performance and reliability, making it suitable for reusable launch vehicles. This development could position India as a competitive player in the global space industry, potentially attracting commercial and strategic missions. The engine's cleaner combustion and advanced manufacturing techniques, including the use of India's largest industrial 3D printer, highlight the country's growing technological prowess.
What's Next?
Astrobase plans to manufacture and test around 20 engines before the first orbital flight, with a current capacity to build six to eight engines annually, which will be scaled up to 60 engines per year. The company has been selected under the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre’s (IN-SPACe) Technology Adoption Fund for further development. The successful deployment of the EVEREST engine could lead to increased collaboration with international space agencies and commercial entities, further boosting India's position in the global space market.
