What's Happening?
The UJA-Federation of New York has donated $1 million to the Arab-Jewish Center for Empowerment, Equality, and Cooperation – Negev Institute for Strategies of Peace and Economic Development (AJEEC-NISPED) to establish a center named after Canadian-Israeli
peace activist Vivian Silver. Silver, who was killed by Hamas terrorists on October 7, 2023, was a co-founder of AJEEC-NISPED, an organization dedicated to fostering Jewish-Arab partnerships in Israel. The new center, located in Beersheva's Science Park, will serve as a hub for cultural events and educational programs aimed at promoting shared society initiatives.
Why It's Important?
This donation is a significant step in promoting peace and cooperation between Jewish and Arab communities in Israel. By honoring Vivian Silver's legacy, the center aims to continue her work in building bridges and fostering understanding across cultural divides. The initiative reflects broader efforts to address longstanding tensions and conflicts in the region, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and collaboration. The center's establishment also highlights the role of international support in advancing peacebuilding efforts, showcasing the impact of philanthropic contributions in conflict resolution and community development.
What's Next?
The Vivian Silver Center for Shared Society is expected to open next year, providing a space for thousands of young adults to engage in mentorship and career development programs. The center will also host cultural events and training sessions, furthering its mission to promote a shared society. As the project progresses, it will likely attract additional support from international donors and organizations committed to peacebuilding. The center's success could serve as a model for similar initiatives in other conflict-affected regions, demonstrating the potential of grassroots efforts in fostering long-term peace and stability.
