What's Happening?
Riyadh Air, a Saudi Arabian airline established in 2023, has applied for a foreign air carrier permit and exemption authority from the U.S. Department of Transportation. This request is part of the airline's strategy to operate scheduled and charter services
between Saudi Arabia and the U.S., aligning with the bilateral air services agreement between the two nations. Despite plans to launch international services, Riyadh Air has yet to receive its first new-build aircraft, which includes orders for Boeing 787-9s, Airbus A350-1000s, and A321neos. The airline has been conducting limited proving flights between Riyadh and London Heathrow using a leased Boeing 787-9. Riyadh Air is wholly owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and is part of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 strategy to diversify its economy and establish Riyadh as a global aviation hub.
Why It's Important?
The approval of Riyadh Air's application could significantly impact the U.S. aviation market by introducing a new competitor on transcontinental routes. This move aligns with Saudi Arabia's broader economic diversification efforts under Vision 2030, potentially increasing air traffic between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia. The entry of Riyadh Air into the U.S. market could also influence pricing and service offerings, benefiting consumers through increased competition. However, the airline's operational timeline remains uncertain due to aircraft delivery delays and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which could affect its ability to commence services as planned.
What's Next?
Riyadh Air is seeking expedited approval from the U.S. Department of Transportation to begin operations once aircraft deliveries are secured and regulatory clearances are obtained. The airline plans to expand its network to include up to 15 destinations from Riyadh, such as London, Paris, and Mumbai, with further routes across the Middle East and Asia. The timeline for launching full passenger services remains uncertain, and the airline's success will depend on overcoming logistical challenges and geopolitical factors.
