What's Happening?
The American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture has announced 'I LOVE Blueberries' as its 19th Book of the Year. Authored by Shannon Anderson, a TEDx speaker and award-winning children's book author, the book is recognized for its educational value
in teaching young readers about agriculture. The story is presented through the creative journal entries of characters Jolie and Margot, focusing on growing blueberries and fostering friendship. Anderson, who has a background in elementary education, expressed gratitude for the recognition and highlighted the collaborative effort with illustrator Jaclyn Sinquett and Feeding Minds Press. The Book of the Year award is part of the Foundation's initiative to promote 'Accurate Ag Books,' a collection that aims to educate and inspire readers about agriculture.
Why It's Important?
The recognition of 'I LOVE Blueberries' underscores the importance of agricultural education in shaping public perceptions and understanding of food sources. By highlighting accurate agricultural narratives, the Foundation aims to bridge the gap between consumers and the agricultural community. This initiative not only educates young readers but also supports the agricultural sector by fostering a more informed and appreciative public. The award also emphasizes the role of literature in promoting agricultural literacy, which is crucial for future generations to understand the significance of agriculture in daily life and the economy.
What's Next?
Following the award, the Foundation has developed an educator's guide and an Ag Mag Mini to accompany 'I LOVE Blueberries,' providing additional resources for teachers and students. These materials are designed to enhance the educational impact of the book and encourage further exploration of agricultural topics. The Foundation continues to support agricultural education through its Accurate Ag Books database, which offers a wide range of resources for various age groups. Additionally, state Farm Bureaus are recognized for their financial contributions to the Foundation, which supports ongoing educational initiatives.
