using artificial intelligence (AI). The study analyzed 500,000 grades from 319 courses across 84 departments at a large, unnamed research university in Texas, covering the period from 2018 to 2025. It found that the introduction of AI tools like ChatGPT has led to a 30% increase in the share of A grades in 'AI-exposed' courses, particularly those with assignments in writing and computer coding. The study suggests that AI is being used as a substitute for student effort on take-home assignments, rather than enhancing learning, as evidenced by the disparity between high homework grades and lower exam performance.
