What's Happening?
Tourism New Zealand has initiated a new campaign titled 'Don't be a Stranger,' aimed at encouraging individuals in Australia, the United Kingdom, and Canada with friends and family in New Zealand to visit the country this year. The campaign specifically
targets the 'Visiting Friends and Relatives' (VFR) segment, which constitutes New Zealand's second-largest international visitor group, contributing approximately $2.6 billion annually. Australia is identified as a priority market due to its proximity, strong air connectivity, and a significant VFR audience, with 45% of all arrivals from Australia in the past year being VFR visitors. The campaign seeks to increase VFR arrivals by over 5,000 by December 2026, projecting an additional $16.4 million contribution to New Zealand's economy. The initiative is part of Tourism New Zealand's broader strategy to boost tourism value and achieve 3.9 million international arrivals by June 2027. Campaign activities include showcasing moments for reconnection in New Zealand, such as the Bledisloe Cup, school holidays, and Christmas celebrations, and features a partnership with radio host Bree Tomasel.
Why It's Important?
This campaign is important for New Zealand's tourism sector and broader economy, as it strategically leverages existing personal connections to drive international arrivals and spending. By focusing on the VFR segment, Tourism New Zealand aims to capitalize on a demographic that already has a strong incentive to travel, potentially leading to more consistent and resilient visitor numbers. The projected increase in VFR arrivals and economic contribution highlights the significant role this segment plays in supporting tourism businesses and communities across the country. Furthermore, VFR travelers often engage in activities similar to other international holiday visitors, such as exploring nature, trying local cuisine, and visiting towns, thereby diversifying the economic benefits beyond just family visits. The campaign's success could serve as a model for other countries looking to boost tourism by tapping into diaspora and familial ties, especially in a competitive global tourism market.
What's Next?
Tourism New Zealand will continue to implement the 'Don't be a Stranger' campaign, with ongoing efforts to reach VFR audiences in Australia, the United Kingdom, and Canada. The campaign's effectiveness will be monitored through metrics such as increased VFR arrivals and their economic contribution, with a target of over 5,000 additional VFR arrivals and $16.4 million in economic impact by December 2026. The broader goal is to achieve 3.9 million international visitor arrivals and $14.4 billion in international visitor spending by June 2027. Future activities may include further partnerships and creative content showcasing New Zealand's attractions and the value of reconnecting with loved ones. The campaign also encourages New Zealand residents to actively invite their overseas friends and family, fostering a community-wide effort to boost tourism.
Beyond the Headlines
The 'Don't be a Stranger' campaign subtly highlights the evolving nature of international travel and tourism marketing. In an era where authentic experiences and personal connections are highly valued, leveraging familial ties offers a unique and powerful approach. This strategy moves beyond generic destination marketing to tap into emotional motivations, potentially leading to longer stays and deeper engagement with the local culture and economy. The campaign also underscores the economic ripple effect of tourism, where initial visits to friends and relatives often lead to broader exploration and spending on local services, events, and attractions. This approach could also foster stronger cultural ties and mutual understanding between New Zealand and the targeted countries, reinforcing long-standing relationships through personal interactions and shared experiences.
