What's Happening?
The Rockford area is benefiting from over $208 million in road and bridge infrastructure projects, either underway or recently completed, as part of the state's Rebuild Illinois capital program. Nine major projects are being delivered, with the Illinois Department
of Transportation (IDOT) stating the work aims to enhance transportation, safety, and mobility while creating jobs. Governor JB Pritzker emphasized that the program is modernizing infrastructure and strengthening transportation corridors statewide. Six of these major projects are expected to conclude in 2026, while three larger initiatives, including significant work on Interstate 39 and U.S. 20 corridors, are scheduled to continue through 2027 and 2028. Completed projects include bridge repairs on Baxter Road over I-39 and resurfacing work on Illinois 70.
