What's Happening?
The WhatsApp desktop application for Windows 11 is facing significant criticism for its excessive RAM consumption and sluggish performance. The current version, which replaced a native app in November 2025, is essentially a web wrapper loading web.whatsapp.com
inside Microsoft Edge WebView2. Users report that the app can consume over 2GB of RAM while simply scrolling through chats, a substantial increase from the previous native app's usage. This high memory footprint is accompanied by slow chat switching, choppy scrolling, and delayed message delivery indicators. In contrast, WhatsApp Web, which now supports voice and video calls, screen sharing, and other features, generally uses less RAM and offers a smoother experience. Some users are opting to uninstall the desktop app in favor of the web version or streaming WhatsApp from their phones.
Why It's Important?
This performance issue impacts a large segment of Windows 11 users in the U.S. who rely on WhatsApp for daily communication, both personal and professional. High RAM usage can degrade overall system performance, especially on devices with limited memory, leading to a frustrating user experience. For businesses, this can translate to reduced productivity if employees are struggling with a slow messaging application. The shift from a native, efficient app to a resource-intensive web wrapper raises questions about Meta Platforms, Inc.'s development priorities for its Windows user base, particularly when a native app is still provided for Mac users. This situation highlights a growing concern among users about the 'enshittification' of software, where applications become less efficient over time.
What's Next?
Many users are migrating to WhatsApp Web or utilizing phone streaming solutions like Microsoft's Phone Link for a more efficient experience. While WhatsApp Web has gained features previously exclusive to the desktop app, such as calls and screen sharing, it still consumes a notable amount of RAM. There is no immediate indication from Meta Platforms, Inc. that a new, optimized native Windows app is in development. The disparity in app quality between Windows and Mac platforms suggests a continued focus on web-based solutions for Windows, despite user complaints. This trend may push more users towards alternative messaging platforms that offer more performant native desktop applications.
Beyond the Headlines
The performance issues with the WhatsApp Windows 11 app reflect a broader industry trend where web technologies are increasingly used to build desktop applications. While this approach can simplify cross-platform development, it often comes at the cost of performance and resource efficiency compared to truly native applications. This situation also underscores the power dynamics between major tech companies and their user bases; despite widespread complaints, Meta Platforms, Inc. has not prioritized a native Windows app, suggesting a strategic decision based on development costs versus perceived user value. This could lead to a growing divide in user experience across different operating systems and influence user loyalty to specific platforms.
