What's Happening?
The Durham County Library is hosting self-paced computer and digital skills classes every Wednesday at its Main branch. These classes utilize Northstar Digital Literacy, a free online resource available to all library patrons, and are designed for individuals
with at least basic keyboard and mouse skills. A library staff member will be present to assist participants and answer questions as they progress through online modules at their own pace. The curriculum covers a wide range of topics, including phone keyboard basics, internet fundamentals, email usage, Windows 10 & 11, Mac OS, Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google Docs, social media, information literacy, career search skills, digital footprint management, accessing telehealth appointments, and cybersecurity basics. Participants can choose which lessons to complete each week and are not required to attend all sessions through December. While laptops are available, attendees are encouraged to bring their own devices and headphones.
Why It's Important?
These free digital skills classes are crucial for bridging the digital divide within the community, offering essential knowledge and tools to residents who may lack proficiency in modern technology. By providing access to self-paced learning and on-site support, the Durham County Library empowers individuals to enhance their computer literacy, which is increasingly vital for employment, education, and daily life. Improved digital skills can lead to better job opportunities, increased access to online services like telehealth, and greater participation in the digital economy. The flexibility of the program, allowing participants to choose their own learning path and attendance schedule, makes it accessible to a broader segment of the population, including those with varying schedules and skill levels. This initiative supports community development by fostering digital inclusion and self-sufficiency.
What's Next?
The Durham County Library will continue to offer these self-paced computer classes on Wednesdays, with participants able to register for the weeks that best suit their schedules. The ongoing availability of these courses suggests a sustained effort to provide digital literacy resources to the community. The library staff will remain available to provide assistance and guidance, ensuring that learners can progress effectively through the Northstar Digital Literacy modules. The program's success may lead to further expansion of digital skill-building initiatives or the introduction of more advanced topics based on community needs and feedback. Individuals interested in participating can contact Jimmy McKinnell for questions or accommodation needs, indicating continued support for accessibility.
Beyond the Headlines
The provision of free, accessible digital literacy programs by public libraries like the Durham County Library highlights a broader societal trend towards recognizing digital skills as a fundamental right and necessity. In an increasingly digital world, the ability to navigate online platforms, use productivity software, and understand cybersecurity basics is no longer a luxury but a prerequisite for full civic and economic participation. Libraries are evolving beyond traditional roles to become critical hubs for digital empowerment, addressing inequalities that arise from unequal access to technology and training. This initiative also underscores the importance of self-directed learning models, which allow individuals to tailor their educational journey to their specific needs and pace, fostering a more inclusive and effective learning environment for diverse populations.
